Tillman joins Lance Briggs on local TV show
September 24th, 2013

During a recent appearance on the Lance Briggs Show, Charles Tillman talked football with his longtime teammate, shared a tidbit about his kids and even demonstrated his most unique talent.

Since being selected by the Bears in back-to-back rounds in the 2003 draft, Tillman (second round) and Briggs (third) both have been voted to multiple Pro Bowls. Last season they became the first teammates in NFL history to each return interceptions for touchdowns in back-to-back games.

On the show on Comcast SportsNet, Tillman revealed that the position he’d most like to play on offense is receiver and the toughest player he has ever faced is ex-Colts wideout Marvin Harrison.

Tillman also praised teammate Devin Hester, who broke his own Bears single-game kickoff return record with 249 yards in a Week 2 win over the Vikings. After doubling as a receiver for six seasons, Hester is working exclusively as a return specialist this year.

“He’s just honed in on his skill set, which is returning kicks, whether it’s kick returns or punt returns,” Tillman said. “He does that all day long and he is the best and he’s doing a great job.”

Tillman has done a great job throughout his career of stripping the ball from opponents, a skill that has become known as the “Peanut Punch.” The Pro Bowl cornerback has forced 39 fumbles since entering the NFL in 2003, the most by any player during that span.

Asked by co-host Pat Boyle what habit his children have picked up from him, Tillman said: “The ‘Peanut Punch.’ I’ll have something and my kids literally knock it out of my hands.”

The show opens with Tillman arriving at the Comcast studio and employing the Peanut Punch to knock mail, tapes and scripts out of the hands of various staffers.

Streak continues: Although he was listed as questionable on the injury report with a sore knee, Tillman made his 51st consecutive start Sunday night in Pittsburgh, helping the Bears improve to 3-0 with a 40-23 win over the Steelers.

Tillman has been very durable since joining the Bears in 2003 as a second-round draft pick from Louisiana-Lafayette, missing just six games over the last eight-plus seasons.

Always thinking: Tillman received kudos from several media outlets for his quick-thinking during the Week 2 win over the Vikings. Standing behind the Bears’ bench, he pulled FOX sideline reporter Laura Okmin out of the path of a vehicle carrying a camera cart.

Websites that wrote about Tillman’s heroic action included Huffington Post, NFL.com, CBS Sports, the Big Lead, Bleacher Report and Yahoo Sports, which compared the two to Superman and Lois Lane. On her Twitter account, Okmin tweeted: “Great save by a great guy. Thank you Peanut Tillman for having my back on Sunday.”

Be prepared: Tillman recently taped a public service announcement outside Soldier Field with FEMA regional administrator Andrew Velasquez to encourage families to develop a disaster preparedness plan. September is National Preparedness Month.

“Practice is essential for every team, including your family, so practice your plan often so that when you are faced with an emergency you know what to do,” Tillman says in the spot.

Another record: With a 41-yard interception return in a Week 1 win over the Bengals, Tillman set an all-time Bears record with 647 interception return yards, eclipsing Richie Petitbon’s 643.

Tillman also holds franchise marks with nine defensive touchdowns and eight interception return TDs. He ranks third with 35 interceptions behind safeties Gary Fencik (38) and Petitbon (37).

Jersey sales: According to the Dick’s Sporting Goods “jersey report,” Tillman’s No. 33 Bears jersey is the second highest seller among all NFL defensive players over the last month, trailing only Steelers safety Troy Polamalu. Redskins defensive end Ryan Kerrigan is third, followed by Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul and Bears defensive end Julius Peppers.
